Spotify Running Mode: Spotify has introduced a new set of fitness-focused features designed specifically for runners, further strengthening its push into the health and wellness space. The latest Running Mode is now rolling out to Spotify Premium users on iOS in the United States, offering AI-powered playlists tailored to individual workout preferences.

Spotify Introduces Smarter Running Playlists

The new Running Mode is available within Spotify’s Fitness Hub, where Premium subscribers can create customized playlists based on the type and duration of their workout.

Users can choose from 25 ready-made workout presets covering different exercise styles and music genres, or create a more personalised experience by selecting specific workout settings.

The feature is designed to help runners stay motivated while keeping music perfectly aligned with their pace and training goals.

Customize Every Workout

Spotify’s Running Mode allows users to personalize several aspects of their workout experience.

The new feature lets runners:

  • Select workout styles such as steady runs, intervals, pyramid training, and more.
  • Set an exact workout duration.
  • Enable BPM (beats per minute) matching so songs align with running pace.
  • Turn on motivational voice prompts that provide encouragement throughout the workout.

Once the settings are selected, Spotify automatically generates a playlist with smooth transitions between tracks, ensuring the music matches the runner’s tempo from start to finish.

Powered by AI Personalization

According to Spotify, fitness-related playlists have become one of the most requested categories among users of its AI-generated Prompted Playlists feature.

The launch of Running Mode builds on that demand by offering even greater personalization, combining AI recommendations with workout-specific settings to deliver a more engaging listening experience.

The company believes customized music can help users stay motivated and improve consistency during exercise.

A Return of a Fan-Favourite Feature

Long-time Spotify users may find the new Running Mode familiar.

The music streaming platform previously offered a similar feature that automatically adjusted songs based on a runner’s pace. However, Spotify discontinued that functionality in 2018.

The latest version reintroduces the concept with significantly improved personalization and AI-powered playlist generation, making it more flexible than its predecessor.

Spotify Expands Its Fitness Ecosystem

The rollout is part of Spotify’s broader strategy to become a stronger player in the digital fitness space.

Earlier this year, the company partnered with Peloton, allowing Premium subscribers to access guided workout classes directly through the Spotify app. The addition of Running Mode further expands its fitness offerings, giving users another way to combine music with exercise.

With AI-driven recommendations, pace-matched playlists and motivational coaching, Spotify aims to deliver a more immersive workout experience while continuing to evolve beyond traditional music streaming.
