Anthropic is set to roll out major changes to access for its Claude Fable 5 AI model starting July 20. Under the revised policy, Max and Team Premium subscribers will continue to receive limited access as part of their plans, while Pro and Team Standard users will shift to a usage credit-based billing system.

The update reflects Anthropic’s efforts to balance growing demand for its most advanced AI model with the high computing resources required to operate it.

Anthropic Revises Claude Fable 5 Access

Beginning July 20, Anthropic will modify how different subscription tiers use Claude Fable 5. While premium subscribers will still have bundled access, lower-tier plans will now rely on a pay-as-you-go model after receiving an initial credit.

The company had originally planned to end promotional access earlier but extended it multiple times before introducing the new pricing structure.

Max and Team Premium Users Keep Included Access

Subscribers on Claude Max and Team Premium plans will continue to use Fable 5 within their existing subscriptions.

However, there is a limit. Users can consume the model for up to 50% of their total subscription usage allowance. After reaching that threshold, additional usage will require purchasing usage credits.

Anthropic clarified that the update applies specifically to Fable 5 and does not affect access to other Claude models included in these premium plans.

The company also noted that demand for Fable 5 has been significantly higher than expected, prompting a phased rollout while additional computing resources are secured.

Pro and Team Standard Plans Move to Usage Credits

For Claude Pro and Team Standard subscribers, Fable 5 will no longer be included under the standard monthly usage limits.

Instead, these users will access the model through metered usage credits.

To ease the transition, Anthropic will provide eligible subscribers with a one-time $100 usage credit. Once the complimentary credit is exhausted, users will need to purchase additional credits to continue using the model.

Claude Fable 5 Pricing Explained

Anthropic has introduced token-based pricing for Fable 5 usage:

  • $10 per million input tokens
  • $50 per million output tokens

The final cost will vary depending on several factors, including:

  • Prompt length
  • Response size
  • Complexity of the task
  • Total tokens processed

Heavy users, especially developers running coding agents or long AI workflows, are expected to consume significantly more tokens.

Why Anthropic Is Changing the Pricing Model

According to Anthropic, advanced AI models such as Fable 5 require substantial computing power, making it increasingly difficult to include unlimited usage within fixed-price subscription plans.

Power users can generate computing costs that far exceed their monthly subscription fees, making a consumption-based billing model more sustainable.

The company had already extended Fable 5’s promotional access several times before deciding on the new approach, which keeps the model bundled only with higher-tier subscriptions while introducing metered billing for lower-priced plans.

Anthropic Expanding AI Infrastructure

To support rising demand, Anthropic continues investing heavily in AI infrastructure.

Reports suggest the company is in discussions with Meta regarding a potential two-year computing capacity lease worth up to $10 billion. While neither company has officially confirmed an agreement, such a partnership could significantly expand Anthropic’s ability to train and operate its AI models.

The company has not announced whether additional infrastructure could eventually lead to another revision of Fable 5 usage limits.

What This Means for Claude Users

The July 20 update marks a significant shift in Anthropic’s subscription strategy. Premium subscribers will continue to enjoy limited bundled access to Claude Fable 5, while Pro and Team Standard users will transition to a usage-based payment model after their initial credits are exhausted.

As demand for advanced AI models continues to grow, usage-based pricing is becoming an increasingly common approach for companies managing high-performance AI services.
