The Delhi High Court on Thursday, October 22, 2026, declined to issue an interim stay on the theatrical release of Doosra, allowing the film to proceed with its scheduled premiere on Friday, October 23. The decision came after former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly and production house Luv Films LLP approached the court seeking to prevent the film’s release.
Justice Dinesh Bhatt, while hearing the urgent petition, made it clear that the court was not halting the release. He stated, “I have said no stay, so the film can go on.” Further proceedings were scheduled for October 23, 2026, to consider the arguments raised by the petitioners.
Why Sourav Ganguly Challenged ‘Doosra’
Ganguly’s petition alleges that Doosra violates his personality and commercial rights by using elements associated with his identity and cricketing career without authorisation.
The plea specifically referred to his tenure as captain of the Indian cricket team, India’s memorable victory over England in the 2002 NatWest Series final, and his iconic shirtless celebration on the Lord’s balcony following the win.
Luv Films LLP, which holds exclusive contractual rights to produce an authorised biopic on Ganguly, has also raised concerns about the film. The production house is developing Dada – The Sourav Ganguly Story, starring Rajkummar Rao, which is reportedly scheduled to release on May 14, 2027.
The petitioners sought an injunction preventing the release of Doosra across platforms. They also requested restrictions on promotional material allegedly using Ganguly’s name, image, likeness and celebrated cricketing moments without permission.
What Is ‘Doosra’ About?
Directed by Abhinay Deo, Doosra stars Plabita Borthakur in the lead role, alongside Ankur Vikal, Samidha Guru, Tvisha Seema and Krishna Gokani.
The film draws inspiration from the emotional impact of India’s 2002 NatWest Series victory, particularly Ganguly’s famous celebration after the final. However, the filmmakers and their legal representatives have argued that the project is not a biopic of the former cricketer.
Instead, the story follows Tara, a young girl growing up in a conservative household during the 1990s. Inspired by Ganguly’s defiant celebration, she finds the courage to challenge societal expectations and pursue personal freedom.
The film’s story and screenplay have been written by Agnello Oswin Dias, with Ram Sampat composing the original score. Masha Sajdeh and Rohan Sajdeh are the producers, while Neeta Shah is the co-producer.
‘Doosra’ Release to Proceed as Legal Battle Continues
The Delhi High Court’s refusal to grant interim relief allows Doosra to proceed with its planned theatrical release on October 23, 2026. However, the decision does not amount to a final ruling on the allegations raised by Ganguly and Luv Films.
The court is scheduled to continue hearing the matter on October 23, when the parties will have another opportunity to present their arguments.
The dispute brings questions surrounding personality rights, commercial interests and creative freedom into focus. As filmmakers increasingly draw inspiration from real-life public figures and historical events, the case highlights the legal issues that can arise when a creative work incorporates elements closely associated with an individual’s identity.
The outcome of the ongoing proceedings will determine how the court addresses the claims raised by Ganguly and the production house, even as Doosra moves ahead with its scheduled release.
