Actor Imran Khan was detained by Mumbai Police at August Kranti Maidan on Saturday while attempting to participate in a protest organised in solidarity with a movement at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. His girlfriend, actor Lekha Washington, was also detained along with him.
Speaking to the media before his detention, Imran clarified that he was not making any personal demands or representing any organisation. He said, “Sir, I don’t have any demands. I don’t have any status to demand anything from people. Nor am I a part of any organization, so I don’t speak as a representative.”
Imran Khan Shares Update From Police Van
Following his detention, the Delhi Belly actor posted a photograph on his official Instagram account from inside a police van. Keeping his characteristic sense of humour intact, he captioned the picture, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.”
Lekha Washington also shared a video from inside the police vehicle, informing her followers that they had been detained. In the clip, she said, “Folks, we have been detained. We are all in a cop car. I am going to send the pin. Can you please follow that? I have no idea where we are going. Let’s hope for the best.”
Imran’s cousin, actor Zayn Khan, who was also present at the protest site, shared a video referencing his debut film, Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na. The video drew a comparison between the actor’s current situation and a scene from the film, in which his character is also arrested by the police.
Why Was a Protest Planned at August Kranti Maidan?
The gathering was reportedly scheduled for 3:30 PM on Saturday at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan under the banner of Hum Bharat Ke Log (We, the People of India). The demonstration was planned in support of the movement at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, which was seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The proposed protest attracted attention as participants prepared to express solidarity with the movement taking place in the national capital.
Mumbai Police Tighten Security Ahead of Protest
Before the demonstration could begin, Mumbai Police put strict security arrangements in place at August Kranti Maidan and nearby areas. Barricades were installed at several locations, while roads leading to the protest venue were closed to restrict access.
Police also took into custody people who arrived at the location to participate in the gathering. Imran Khan and Lekha Washington were among those detained as authorities enforced security measures at the site.
