The Indian box office in 2026 was expected to be dominated by high-profile releases such as Dhurandhar 2, Border 2, Toxic and Peddi. However, several films outside the expected blockbuster list ended up delivering some of the biggest surprises of the year.

With modest budgets and limited star power, these movies managed to attract audiences through strong content and positive word-of-mouth. Their unexpected theatrical success helped them outperform several much bigger releases and emerge as some of the most profitable films of 2026.

Biggest Surprise Box Office Hits of 2026

From Hanuman Ansh to Premada Oorali, here are seven films that exceeded box-office expectations this year.

1. Hanuman Ansh

Hanuman Ansh emerged as one of the biggest box-office surprises of 2026. Made on a budget of just Rs 2 crore, the film went on to earn more than Rs 400 crore worldwide, including Rs 326 crore from India.

The film initially struggled to attract significant attention. However, its performance changed dramatically after the first month as positive word-of-mouth brought more audiences to theatres.

2. Bethlehem Kudumba Unit

Starring Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit was produced on a relatively modest budget of Rs 25 crore. The film eventually became a massive commercial success, collecting more than Rs 310 crore worldwide.

The movie also emerged as the highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2026, surpassing the collections of Lokah.

3. Irumudi

Irumudi provided a major boost to Ravi Teja after a string of disappointing box-office performances. Made with a budget of Rs 35 crore, the film surprised the trade by earning more than Rs 250 crore worldwide.

Its strong theatrical run made it one of the biggest Telugu successes of 2026.

4. Maa Inti Bangaram

Samantha’s Maa Inti Bangaram also defied expectations at the box office. The film generated considerable interest among audiences, particularly because of Samantha’s appearance in an action-oriented role.

Produced on a budget of around Rs 20-25 crore, the film crossed the Rs 100 crore mark worldwide, turning into a major commercial success.

5. Mandaadi

Starring Soori in the lead role, Mandaadi managed to achieve both commercial and critical success. While the film had generated some anticipation before its release, its eventual performance exceeded expectations.

Made on a budget of Rs 75 crore, the movie collected more than Rs 150 crore worldwide and emerged as a blockbuster.

6. DC

Lokesh Kanagaraj, known for directing some of Tamil cinema’s biggest action films, made a different move with DC by taking on an acting role. The film was produced on a budget of just Rs 25 crore.

It went on to earn more than Rs 105 crore worldwide and also received positive appreciation from critics, making it another unexpected success of 2026.

7. Premada Oorali

Premada Oorali became one of the biggest Kannada hits of the year despite its limited budget. Made for around Rs 2-3 crore, the film earned more than Rs 20 crore worldwide.

Strong word-of-mouth played a major role in its theatrical performance, helping the film become one of the most profitable Kannada releases of 2026.

2026 Box Office: Content Over Star Power

The unexpected success of these seven films highlights how strongly audiences responded to content in 2026. Despite their comparatively small budgets or limited star power, the movies managed to connect with viewers and deliver impressive theatrical numbers.

Their performances proved to be among the year’s biggest box-office surprises, showing that strong word-of-mouth can turn an underdog release into a major commercial success.
